The Adler Goes Green
"I wish everybody could have the experience of looking back at the Earth and realizing that it's really no different from a spacecraft. The 5 1/2 billion inhabitants of Earth are all astronauts living on a spaceship that has limited resources. We have to use these resources very wisely if the ship is to keep us alive." — Captain James Lovell
Over the past several years, the Adler has taken significant steps to ensure a greener operation. By continuing to reduce the size of our environmental footprint, the Adler hopes to demonstrate the museum’s commitment as a leader in sustainable stewardship.
Green Initiatives
Over 50 tons of recyclable material was diverted from landfills last year. Additionally, 20% of the Adler’s electrical use is offset by the purchase of wind energy. The Adler Planetarium is a City of Chicago certified Green Museum, participating in citywide meetings to discuss green procurement, green capital improvement projects, eco-themed exhibitions, and environmental outreach and education. The Adler is a member of the EPA Green Power Partnership and the Clean Air Counts Illinois Regional Initiative.
The Adler Green Team also promotes alternative modes of transportation. Adler staff members participate in the annual city-wide "Commuter Challenge". The 2011 event will take place June 11 - 17.
