The next planetary science mission on deck is BRRISON (Balloon Rapid Response for ISON). It is the first planetary science balloon mission in 50 years. The mission will observe comet ISON - and other science targets - using a telescope carried high into Earth's atmosphere (up to 140,000 feet) by a massive balloon.
The BRRISON payload was rolled out of its processing bay Thursday morning at Ft. Sumner, N.M., for electronics and communications testing. It is expected to launch during the early morning on September 29, weather permitting. During it Sunday flight, BRRISON will observe the comet as it heads towards the sun for its passage of the fiery giant in late November.
