Your Adler experience doesn’t need to begin and end with your field trip. Bring the Adler to your classroom before or after your visit.

Adler's Portable Dome Outreach Program

Educate/Outreach_Dome

Can't come to the Adler on a field trip? Let the Adler come to you! The Portable Dome Outreach Program brings the Adler Planetarium to Chicago area schools. Our Portable Dome Outreach Program includes an interactive and facilitated experience by an Adler educator for your class. The experience includes opportunities for a pre-show and post-show activity. We currently offer Portable Dome Outreach for three shows, One World One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure (grades preK-2), Earth, Moon & Sun (grades 3-6), and IBEX (grades 9-12).

One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure

Grades Pre-K-2

Limit 25 students per show

Students will experience the awe and excitement of the daytime and nighttime sky through our One World, One Sky: Big Bird's Adventure sky show. The fun begins on Sesame Street when Elmo's friend, Hu Hu Zhu, visits from China. Big Bird, Elmo, and Hu Hu Zhu share what they know about the Sun, Moon and Stars, learn about the Big Dipper, and take an imaginary trip to the Moon. When Elmo and Hu Hu Zhu imagine themselves back on Earth, they celebrate the idea that even though they live in two different countries, they still share the same sky.

Earth, Moon & Sun

Grades 3-6

Limit 20 students per show

Explore the relationship between the Earth, Moon and Sun with the help of Coyote, an amusing character adapted from Native American oral traditions. Coyote has many misconceptions about our home planet and its most familiar neighbors. His confusion about the Universe makes viewers think about how the Earth, Moon and Sun work together as a system. Learn why the Sun rises and sets and the basics of fusion and solar energy. Examine the Moon's orbit, craters, phases and eclipses. The show also explores past and future space travel to our Moon and beyond.

IBEX: Search for the Edge of the Solar System

Grades 9-12

Limit 15 students per show

Join scientists who are investigating the boundary between the Solar System and the rest of our galaxy. IBEX: Search for the Edge of the Solar System follows the creation of NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX). Students will get an in-depth look at the mission and how IBEX is collecting high-speed atoms to create a map of our Solar System's boundary. Narrated by two inquisitive teenagers, audiences will hear from the scientists and engineers that developed the IBEX mission and created the spacecraft, and get the latest updates on the mission's discoveries.

Did you know?

The Adler opened the same year that Pluto was discovered. That is why the dwarf planet is missing from our planet plaques in the lobby.
