Introduction
The Adler Planetarium seeks to inspire the next generation of explorers and scientists. The Adler’s array of educational offerings — from interactive demonstrations to graduate level coursework—are designed to equip participants with the skills and desire to learn more about our Universe.
Daily visitors to the Adler may encounter hands-on learning opportunities throughout the museum. Many people experience the night sky through a telescope for the first time on the Adler’s telescope terrace or in the Doane Observatory. Younger visitors can act-out astronomy stories, do science experiments or find constellations in a sky show. Interested adults and teens are invited to join the education team as docents and volunteers.
In addition, the Adler supports school groups through a variety of offerings, ranging from sky shows, to field trip guides, to interactive software experiences. Teachers and administrators enroll in the Adler’s respected professional development programs and may borrow curriculum-related science kits and field trip support materials.
The Adler is a national leader in science education. Teachers and community groups from across the country can sign up for interactive videoconferences designed and led by Adler educators and/or scientists. We also sponsor symposia and lecture series for adults. Interested members of the general public are invited to download Adler-produced podcasts of videoconferences, lectures and symposia.
The Adler partners with a number of science programs to provide related Education and Public Outreach (E/PO) programming. The Adler is the E/PO Lead for NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX). Visitors to the website can subscribe to receive monthly highlights about the mission.
