Partner with the Adler
The Adler Planetarium partners with a large number of educational, cultural, and youth development organizations including select Chicago Public Schools (CPS) High Schools, the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum, and Chicago’s Hive Learning Network. The Adler also partners with NASA through the Education and Public Outreach programs in NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. The Adler Planetarium provides educational opportunities and public outreach to support this space science research.
Working Closely with NASA
The Adler is proud to partner with NASA on a number of exciting projects. We have a number of partnerships with Education and Public Outreach programs in NASA's Science Mission Directorate. NASA's Science Mission Directorate develops, launches, and operates unmanned spacecraft to answer science questions relating to our Earth, our Sun and its influence on the rest of the Solar System, our Solar System's family of planets, moons, and other bodies, and our Universe. Our role ranges from education and public outreach to space science research.
Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX)
IBEX is a NASA-funded Small Explorer satellite mission that orbits Earth and maps the boundary of the Solar System. The Adler is the lead Education and Public Outreach (E/PO) institution for the IBEX mission.
Since the IBEX mission began, Adler Planetarium staff have developed a wide range of materials and products to help explain the science behind the mission.
Education and Public Outreach Forums
NASA has funded four Science Education and Public Outreach Forums (SEPOFs) to increase the overall coherence of NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) Education and Public Outreach programs. The Adler Planetarium is a participant in two of the Forums: Heliophysics and Astrophysics.
Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO)
LRO is NASA's flagship robotic mission to explore the Moon from a very low orbit using a variety of scientific instruments, including a camera. Highly detailed images from this camera have been integrated into the Adler Planetarium's Moon Wall in the Shoot for the Moon exhibition. Educational materials relating to LRO and the Moon have also been incorporated into the Adler's Space Explorers Afterschool Science Club program.
Partnering with Chicago-area Schools
The Adler Planetarium is proud to partner with select Chicago Public Schools (CPS) High Schools including, The Air Force Academy HS, North Lawndale College Prep, ChicagoQuest and Noble Network Charters. We also partner with several cultural and youth development institutions in Chicago's Hive Learning Network including, YMCA of Metro Chicago’s Black and Latino Achievers Program, Yollocalli Arts Reach, the Digital Youth Network, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Shedd Aquarium, the Chicago Architecture Foundation, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
The Adler is a proud member of the Chicago Hive Learning Network.
Early Childhood Partnerships
In partnership with The Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, and Shedd Aquarium, the Adler Planetarium collaborates with preschool teachers and assistant teachers from Chicago Public Schools and Big Shoulders Fund to enhance science education in early childhood classrooms. As part of the Early Science Learning program, teachers and assistant teachers engage in professional development opportunities focused on science inquiry and practical application in the classroom. Furthermore, teachers and assistant teachers participate in family events at schools and museums that reinforce and extend the relevance of science skills to everyday experiences.
The Adler Planetarium works closely with Chicago-area schools including the Air Force Academy High School, North Lawndale College Prep, and Morgan Park Academy. Partner schools participate in specialized field trips and students engage in opportunities such as internships and volunteering.
