Meet some of the members of the Adler staff. We'll introduce someone new every quarter! This quarter we are featuring Larry Ciupik, M.S.
Larry Ciupik - Gamma Ray Astronomer
Larry Ciupik, M.S., works with the Astronomy Department at the Adler Planetarium as a Gamma Ray Astronomer.
How long have you worked at the Adler?
I have worked at the Adler for 40 years as of June 14, 2011.
What is your day to day at the Adler like?
I start off my day at home looking at my calendar and email from Adler staff and my outside science collaborators from the VERITAS (Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System) high-energy gamma ray project. I also review the web to scout out breaking news in Astronomy and Space Science. Then, when I arrive at work, I quickly review any recent emails sent during my commute. Nearly every day at Adler brings new interesting challenges. In the first few days of this week, for example, I have been reviewing constellation drawings for an exhibit project and working on the Skywatcher's Guide for 2012. But last Friday I was preparing for interviews with local TV stations who wanted to know details about where and when NASA's UARS satellite would crash. Every week I have several conference calls with my VERITAS collaborators and I spend some time each day reading (and editing) research papers.
What is your favorite thing about working at the Adler?
I most enjoy working with the Adler staff on our wide range of projects and talking to the public in the Space Visualization Lab and the Doane Observatory about Astronomy and Space Science! Our projects vary greatly over the full range of Astronomy and Space Science, and even beyond science fact to science fiction.
