13th Annual Roderick S. Webster Memorial Lecture
Astronomy, Space, and Time in Medieval Churches
Speaker: Stephen McCluskey, PhD
Date: Thursday, September 9, 2010
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Location: Universe Theater
Cost: Free
Steven
McCluskey, PhD will explore "Astronomy, space, and time in medieval
churches", with special attention to the orientation of medieval
churches to the location of the rising sun on selected feast days.
It is a commonplace that in the Middle Ages the Christian church – as an institution – was the primary center of education, including education in the sciences. Less well known is the fact that Christian churches – as physical structures – embodied and portrayed elements of astronomical learning in a way that was accessible to, and used by the general populace.
Admission is free and open to the public. No registration is required. A reception will follow the lecture.
Sponsored by the Adler Planetarium and the Archaeological Institute of America: The Chicago Society.
