Galaxy Wall
The Adler’s Galaxy Wall is the largest, most complete view of our galaxy — the Milky Way — ever made.
Location: Lower Level (see map)
Appropriate for: All ages
Unveiled in December 2009, the Galaxy Wall is comprised of more than 400,000 individual images and spans 140 feet across. The photographs were taken by the Spitzer Space Telescope, which orbits Earth and surveys the skies in the infrared wavelengths.
In this beautiful mosaic, the entire stellar life cycle can be seen. From the gas and dust that may one day form stars to the supernovae explosions and nebulae that signal their deaths, the Galaxy Wall is a
glimpse of our continually evolving galaxy.
The image shows how our galaxy looks from Earth, the only view currently available to us. Since we are inside the Milky Way, we cannot see it from the outside.
