Although Bode based this smaller atlas on Jean Fortin's 1776 French edition of John Flamsteed's atlas, he included many more stars and enhanced the figures slightly. Bode was one of the most popular of early cartographers who defined constellations with boundaries using Flamsteed's assignments of stars to certain constellations. Some of these assignments were in error, which caused certain of Bode's boundaries to overlap onto constellation figures, such as in this chart on Leo's back.
