To preserve the Adler's renowned History of Astronomy
collections for present and future presentation and study by the
international scientific and historical communities as well as the
interested public. Careful and proper preservation methods insure the
survival of materials which can otherwise become damaged, destroyed, or
misplaced.
Responsibilities:
•Participate in the ongoing care and recordkeeping of the History
of Astronomy collections, which includes hands-on experience with
historical artifacts, works on paper, rare books, and photographs.
• Responsibilities include labeling artifacts, taking measurements,
researching data on the instruments and entering information into the
computer database. • Other duties may include assistance with
exhibit preparation as well as other routine collections management
tasks as necessary.
Qualifications:
An
interest in working with objects and books. Must be able to pay close
attention to detail, to work well independently, and to exercise
patience. Familiarity with computers a must. Previous experience with
research and artifact handling helpful but not necessary.
Training:
Attend general orientation and training session. Individual training
on the collections computer system and archival procedures also
provided.
Requirements:
Make a regular commitment of a minimum of eight hours per month, three hours per session, during weekday visitor hours between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
