To lead educational and interactive activities for visitors to the planetarium using tours, demonstration, experiments, storytelling, and costumed characters. Volunteers will learn about space science and share that knowledge with visitors while fulfilling their service learning requirements.
Responsibilities:
• Share ideas about space sciences, particularly astronomy and physics, with museum visitors.
• Conduct scientific demonstrations, crafts and other hands-on activities related to astronomy.
• Answer questions and explain ideas presented in exhibits to visitors.
• Inform Volunteer Program Manager of schedule changes, conflicts and all happy experiences.
Qualifications:
Must be at least 15 years old. Should enjoy interacting with children, families, adults and groups. Have an interest in learning about science, particularly astronomy.
Must submit two letters of recommendation and a letter of interest with their application. Recommendations should be from teachers, school counselors, principals, or clergy.
Training:
Special Events Volunteers must complete at least one training. Trainings are offered on different aspects of the volunteer program every other month. At their interview with the Manager of Volunteer Services, volunteers will be made aware of upcoming trainings they may be able to attend.
Commitment:
• Successfully complete training program.
• 20-40 hours of service to be completed in either 5 week or 10 week time frames with the exception of Spring Break or Winter Break weeks. Spring break and Winter Break hours would need to be completed in the one or two week timeframe associated with these breaks. Note: You cannot volunteer for less than 4 hours per day.
• Service hours could be completed during weekends, spring break, summer vacation, or winter break.
